It was a Friday night showdown. The Canon City Tigers made a trip east on Highway 50 to Jerry Kersey Gym to take on the Lady Cyclones.
The Cyclones came into this game with an impressive 13-2 record, with losses to Air Academy High School, and South Central League Pueblo South.
The Tigers, another SC-L team came into this game 8-7, with one of those losses coming from the Cyclones themselves earlier in the season. In that loss Pueblo West’s Taylor Leyva led the team in scoring with 18 points, leaving senior Dee Arrieta in second with 13. The tigers top scorer was Nicole Archambeau with 6 points on the game. The final score of that game was 57-22 Pueblo West.
7:00 pm rolled around and the game was underway. Canon City won the jump ball and had possession within seconds. The Cyclone defense got the ball back and number 22 Dee Arrieta made the first score of the game in the first minute of play.
The first half offered a dominant Cyclone performance, with the score at 22-14 Pueblo West at its end. Both teams came out of the locker rooms ready to play an exciting second half. However, in the 3rd quarter a strong Cyclone offense and an excellent defense held the Tigers to 5 points as they extended their lead to 38 to 19 by the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter came around and the ladies of Pueblo West added 16 points to their score ending the game with a final score 54-38 Pueblo west.
At the final buzzer both teams shook hands and went to their locker rooms. It seemed as if history repeated itself January 20th in Jerry Kersey, just like in their previous battle, Taylor Leyva was the top scorer for West with 19 points. The same goes for Canon City with Nicole Archambeau as their point leader. With quite a few fouls tonight January 20, the Cyclones made 15 out of 21 free throws and gain another league win.
When asked of how he felt about tonight’s game head coach Mike Wilkinson said, “ We didn’t play very well. There wasn’t a lot of intensity or focus, but we got a win and that’s important.”
Senior Sarah Vigil said “ We played horribly, but a win’s a win, but we could’ve played better.” Celeste Wormington expressed similar sentiments when saying, “ It was not our best game, and we could’ve done a lot better.” This win on the 20th of January led the Cyclones to advance to a 14-2 record and are going to spend the week preparing for the game against rival Pueblo County who is 9-7 and 2-3 in the South Central League.
