Paterno Dies at 85.

The tragedy of Paterno’s death has spread throughout the country. Even those who didn’t know him felt remorse for the situation at hand. Only shortly after Joe was fired for the Sandusky scandal, his health began to deteriorate. Paterno was fired in November when (owners of the team) John Surma and Steve Garban reportedly said that “his services were no longer needed.”

He had gone into the hospital only two months later with complications from his lung cancer treatment. His condition was reported from being moderate, to weeks later, being serious. On Saturday evening, supporters of Paterno surrounded the hospital that Paterno was being cared for holding lit candles. A very eerie mood was spread across the crowd that could be felt from miles away. What was to come no could have ever predicted. On Sunday morning, Paterno’s family announced that he had passed away. He died due to complications from his lung cancer. His passion for the game seemed to be the man’s last string. Joseph Paterno will be missed by millions and his legacy will be forever remembered.

Cyclones beat South

On Tuesday February 7th, the Pueblo West Cyclones and the South Colts were equipped for combat in Jerry Kersey Gymnasium. The stands were packed with spectators, parents, and student sections from each school.

As the first quarter started, the Colts and Cyclones each hit 3 pointers back to back. The Colts made three more from downtown as the Cyclones matched the pace but missed easy shots down low. However, they made up for it in offensive rebounds. As the quarter concluded the score was 20-17, Colts.

The second quarter started off slow, the scoreboard began to fill with fouls, and there was no scoring in the first two and a half minutes from either team. The Cyclones continued to miss easy baskets but continued to get the offensive rebounds. A total of only 11 points was scored by both teams combined.

Both teams committed several fouls and left the Cyclones with 11 and the Colts with 6. The final score at the end of the first half was 25-23 Colts.

Once the third quarter began, the Cyclones came out looking good. They ran off to a 15-0 run until there were 3 seconds to go. At this point, one Colts player was fouled and made two free throws. West only committed two fouls in the second half which was significantly less than the first half. At the end of the quarter the score was 40-25 Cyclones.

The fourth quarter started and West continued to roll making more than 50 percent of their shots in the paint. At this point, South’s fouls exceeded those of West by 10. West had a 15 point lead with 1:45 left in the game and the entire Cyclone bench was sent onto the court. The Cyclones endured a tough game but prospered and beat the Colts 63-54.

Cyclones lose in a close game

On Tuesday the 24th, the Cyclones and Hornets prepared for battle in Jerry Kersey Gymnasium. The stands were packed on both sides of the court.

As the first quarter started, the Cyclones ran off to a 15-6 lead. They kept up the pace with 3-point shots from senior Garrett Miller and great defensive rebounds. However, junior Braydon Barry ran into quick foul trouble with 3 personals.

The second quarter started off much as the same as the first quarter with the Cyclones making well needed baskets. The Hornets were matching West in completed shots, but the score was largely in favor of West going into halftime 38-26.

Once the third quarter started, the Hornets began to make some progress. They started making 3-point shots and easy layups, while the Cyclones kept turning the ball over. By the end of the third quarter the Hornets went on to another run and were within only 3.

The fourth quarter started and the intensity in the crowd rose. With about 2 minutes left in the game, County pulled ahead after a back and forth affair. The Hornets scored an easy “and 1” at the top of the minute but missed the free throw and as a result became up by 3. West pulled back within one point with two made free throw shots by Logen Letofsky. The Hornets then got the ball back and were fouled. One Hornet player made the first free throw and missed the second.

Miller then rebounded the ball and drove down court. He then passed it to Letofsky for a possible game winning three but he could not make the shot. When asked what he could have done better during the game Miller replied, “ We could have got a lot of more stops on  defense while committing less fouls.”

The coaches seemed to be exhausted and disappointed on the turnout of the game. When Coach Tyler was asked what the key reason for the loss tonight was he said, “The point guards had a lot of key turnovers when it really mattered.” The Cyclones lost to the Hornets 63-61.
