What do extinct plants, Roman gods and sacrificial goats have in common? Valentine’s day, of course! Valentine’s Day is an important day of the year for couples and single people alike. Around this ‘love’-ly time of year, we have a lot of traditions and symbols that become more prevalent than ever, but we don’t often question where these symbols came from. One of the biggest aspects of Valentine’s Day is the gifts. We often exchange gifts with family, friends, and, needless to say, that special someone. During the days leading up to Valentine’s Day Americans purchase: 58 million pounds of chocolate 8 million “conversation hearts” 110 million roses 180 million cards And a whopping $2.2 billion worth of jewelry We also have a lot of symbols that are especially prevalent leading up to this particular day of February, namely Hearts and Cupid. Leaving School On a New Road
At the end of the school day at Pueblo West High School, getting out of the parking lot or drop off loop can be quite the wait. With only two ways to exit the school, from the dirt parking lot and the main parking lot, traffic can get pretty tied up on Capistrano. The Pueblo West Metro District noticed most cars leaving the school turn left. PWMD decided it was in everyone’s best interest to build new entrance and exit points to the school. A new road will be built off of Spaulding and lead to the high school. This will allow students, parents, and staff to enter and leave the school a little faster. “The new road should be started around the time school gets out, so we do not interrupt anything. And it should hopefully be completed in the fall of the next school year,” Rick Morgan of Read the Rest »
Proposed Bills Causes Internet Strike
There was an internet protest last Wednesday to protest the newly proposed laws, SOPA and PIPA. They were introduced on October 26th, 2011. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a new bill that has been created to stop copyright infringement by restricting access to sites that host pirated content. PIPA (Protect IP Act) is a proposed bill with the goal of giving the U.S. government and copyright holders additional tools to curb access to piracy sites most of which are outside the U.S. Basically, this means the entertainment company can sue a site for having anything that is already copyrighted without permission. They would be able to block sites they thought were violating the new law. Well- known sites like Google, Wikipedia, and Reddit blacked out to raise awareness and challenge the new bills. Even the CyChron blacked out in support of the demonstration. As a result of the great blackout, 25 Read the Rest »
School officials respond to Facebook accusations
Within the past few weeks, five new Facebook accounts were created under the aliases of Allison Harnett, Luke McCall, Sophie Harnett, Kate Crawford, and Jake Crawford. Some students have accused assistant principals Sandy Gibbs, Cody Kuhlman, and Gary McCown of being behind these Facebook accounts. Throughout the week students were skeptical. “An anonymous source told me to watch out for these certain fake profiles on Facebook ,” said Aaron Jamnik. “The profiles were kind of fishy. . . ” Among the more implausible information listed on the accounts include the fact that all of the people have degrees from Yale and seemed to “like” all of the same things. Also, the pictures behind the false accounts belong to the cast of a popular show in Buenos Aires called Casi Angeles. Rumors circulating among the students theorized that the Assistant Principals had created the profiles in order to gain information about Read the Rest »
