The tragedy of Paterno’s death has spread throughout the country. Even those who didn’t know him felt remorse for the situation at hand. Only shortly after Joe was fired for the Sandusky scandal, his health began to deteriorate. Paterno was fired in November when (owners of the team) John Surma and Steve Garban reportedly said that “his services were no longer needed.” He had gone into the hospital only two months later with complications from his lung cancer treatment. His condition was reported from being moderate, to weeks later, being serious. On Saturday evening, supporters of Paterno surrounded the hospital that Paterno was being cared for holding lit candles. A very eerie mood was spread across the crowd that could be felt from miles away. What was to come no could have ever predicted. On Sunday morning, Paterno’s family announced that he had passed away. He died due to complications from his lung cancer. His passion for the game seemed to be the man’s last string. Read the Rest »

Thursday, February 9, 2012. The Pueblo West Lady Cyclones and the East Eagles prepared for a battle on the Cyclones’ home court known as Jerry Kersey Gym. The Cyclones came into this game with 17 wins and only 3 losses, while the Eagles held a record of 7 wins and 11 losses. The fans were ready for the exhibition to begin as 7 pm rolled around. The jump ball was won by the Cyclones who drove it down the court only to have a foul called against them in the first 30 seconds of play. Luckily, the free throw was missed and the game went on, with no score in the first minute. The Cyclones’ offense went down the court again and scored. Immediately the Eagles offense put it into gear and made a basket of their own to keep pace with this Cyclone squad. The Eagles started to fall behind though, and the Read the Rest »

Friday, February 17, 2012, the Lady Cyclones hosted their District 70 and Southern Colorado League rival, The Pueblo County Hornets. This night was not only the last regular season game for the Cyclones, but was also their senior night. As the start of the game came around, the Cyclones lined up all of their varsity seniors, who would eventually take the court as starters. DeeAnna Arrieta, Destinie Jones, Sarah Vigil, Bailey Ford, and Shadae Brody played their last regular season game in their high school career. The jump ball ignited the battle that would take place on the Cyclones home court. The Cyclones quickly gained control and made first contact with the ball, driving down the court. Their first drive proved literally pointless though, and the Hornets took their turn at the hoop but scored no points either. On the Cyclones second turn on offense, Pueblo West’s Dee Arrieta drove down the court to Read the Rest »

People are delighted by recent gas prices in Pueblo. The price per gallon fell below $3 for the first time on December 17th 2011 and now gas is as low as $2.85 in some places, according to automotive.com. Pueblo West High student Kitrick Ortiz had this to say, “Oh yeah, everything’s perfect I can actually spend the money I earn on something of real value.” So if everything is perfect, gas is lower than it has been in recent months and people can actually get from point A to point B without pulling their hair out at the pump why is there cause for concern? To destroy Iran’s economy and ultimately stop its Nuclear program the United States and the European Union have placed economic sanctions on Iran oil. According to the Telegraph, this could have a serious impact on the price of oil throughout the entire world. The United States does not Read the Rest »

What do extinct plants, Roman gods and sacrificial goats have in common? Valentine’s day, of course! Valentine’s Day is an important day of the year for couples and single people alike. Around this ‘love’-ly time of year, we have a lot of traditions and symbols that become more prevalent than ever, but we don’t often question where these symbols came from. One of the biggest aspects of Valentine’s Day is the gifts. We often exchange gifts with family, friends, and, needless to say, that special someone. During the days leading up to Valentine’s Day Americans purchase: 58 million pounds of chocolate 8 million “conversation hearts” 110 million roses 180 million cards And a whopping $2.2 billion worth of jewelry We also have a lot of symbols that are especially prevalent leading up to this particular day of February, namely Hearts and Cupid. Although ancient philosophers like Aristotle believed a person’s Read the Rest »

On Tuesday February 7th, the Pueblo West Cyclones and the South Colts were equipped for combat in Jerry Kersey Gymnasium. The stands were packed with spectators, parents, and student sections from each school. As the first quarter started, the Colts and Cyclones each hit 3 pointers back to back. The Colts made three more from downtown as the Cyclones matched the pace but missed easy shots down low. However, they made up for it in offensive rebounds. As the quarter concluded the score was 20-17, Colts. The second quarter started off slow, the scoreboard began to fill with fouls, and there was no scoring in the first two and a half minutes from either team. The Cyclones continued to miss easy baskets but continued to get the offensive rebounds. A total of only 11 points was scored by both teams combined. Both teams committed several fouls and left the Cyclones Read the Rest »

On Friday the 27th, Cyclone and Bulldog fans filled Jerry Kersey Gymnasium. The Lady Cyclones put on an outstanding show, the final score being 83-9. Unlike the past couple of games, the Lady Cyclones seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Senior guard, Dee Arrieta, hit a few threes throughout the course of the game and Haley Simental added a couple as well. The team’s inside game didn’t look bad either as every post on the roster managed to score. For the first time in a while it seemed that on both sides of the floor, the Lady Cyclones were intense, getting steal after steal and converting on the fastbreak. By the end of the first half the Cyclones had scored 53 and kept the Bulldogs scoreless. The second half started off much as the same as the first quarter with the Cyclones making even more of a lead, ending the game with an outstanding score of Cyclones 83 Bulldogs Read the Rest »

On Tuesday the 24th, the Cyclones and Hornets prepared for battle in Jerry Kersey Gymnasium. The stands were packed on both sides of the court. As the first quarter started, the Cyclones ran off to a 15-6 lead. They kept up the pace with 3-point shots from senior Garrett Miller and great defensive rebounds. However, junior Braydon Barry ran into quick foul trouble with 3 personals. The second quarter started off much as the same as the first quarter with the Cyclones making well needed baskets. The Hornets were matching West in completed shots, but the score was largely in favor of West going into halftime 38-26. Once the third quarter started, the Hornets began to make some progress. They started making 3-point shots and easy layups, while the Cyclones kept turning the ball over. By the end of the third quarter the Hornets went on to another run and were within only 3.
It was a Friday night showdown. The Canon City Tigers made a trip east on Highway 50 to Jerry Kersey Gym to take on the Lady Cyclones. The Cyclones came into this game with an impressive 13-2 record, with losses to Air Academy High School, and South Central League Pueblo South. The Tigers, another SC-L team came into this game 8-7, with one of those losses coming from the Cyclones themselves earlier in the season. In that loss Pueblo West’s Taylor Leyva led the team in scoring with 18 points, leaving senior Dee Arrieta in second with 13. The tigers top scorer was Nicole Archambeau with 6 points on the game. The final score of that game was 57-22 Pueblo West. 7:00 pm rolled around and the game was underway. Canon City won the jump ball and had possession within seconds. The Cyclone defense got the ball back and number 22 Dee Arrieta made the first score of Read the Rest »

At the end of the school day at Pueblo West High School, getting out of the parking lot or drop off loop can be quite the wait. With only two ways to exit the school, from the dirt parking lot and the main parking lot, traffic can get pretty tied up on Capistrano. The Pueblo West Metro District noticed most cars leaving the school turn left. PWMD decided it was in everyone’s best interest to build new entrance and exit points to the school. A new road will be built off of Spaulding and lead to the high school. This will allow students, parents, and staff to enter and leave the school a little faster. “The new road should be started around the time school gets out, so we do not interrupt anything. And it should hopefully be completed in the fall of the next school year,” Rick Morgan of Read the Rest »
